Glencoe, IL — A cloud of grief hangs over Glencoe and the greater Chicago area following the tragic death of 32-year-old Alejandro Fernandez, who was killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 6, on the Edens Expressway near Tower Road.
What began as an ordinary drive ended in devastation, as a suspected wrong-way driver collided with multiple vehicles around 2:52 a.m. Illinois State Police confirmed the crash involved at least four vehicles: a red Pontiac, a black Hyundai, a white Jeep, and a gray Tesla. Alejandro Fernandez was among those struck and suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
Described by loved ones as kind-hearted, driven, and full of promise, Alejandro’s passing has left a painful void in the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend—someone whose presence brought light, laughter, and warmth to everyone he encountered.
“He had the rare gift of making people feel like they mattered,” said a close friend. “His compassion was unmatched. He was someone you could count on in the darkest moments.”
First responders arrived to a chaotic and heartbreaking scene, with twisted wreckage scattered across multiple lanes of the expressway. Witnesses reported flames and cries for help as crews worked quickly to extract the injured and extinguish the fires. Several others involved in the collision were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries. Their conditions have not yet been released.
Early reports suggest one of the vehicles may have been traveling in the wrong direction—an increasingly deadly trend on Illinois roadways. State police are now conducting a full investigation into how the crash unfolded, reviewing surveillance footage, gathering witness statements, and awaiting toxicology results.
“This was a preventable tragedy,” said one family member at a small, private memorial. “Alejandro’s life was stolen by carelessness. We cannot let his death be in vain.”
In the wake of the crash, community members are calling for stronger preventative measures, including more visible signage, additional wrong-way detection systems, and increased patrols during overnight hours—when many of these fatal incidents occur.
Alejandro’s loved ones are now planning a vigil to honor his life and legacy. There are also efforts underway to establish a scholarship fund in his name, ensuring that his spirit of generosity and love for helping others lives on.
As one community member posted online: “Alejandro, we will never forget you. Your light was so bright, and though you’re gone, you will shine through each of us, always.”
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Illinois State Police. Authorities are committed to holding those responsible accountable—and to preventing such heartbreak from striking again.
Alejandro Fernandez’s life ended far too soon. But those who knew him vow his story will not end here. It will continue in the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the justice his family now seeks
