MUMBAI, India — A horrifying medical accident has claimed the life of a 61-year-old man who was fatally injured after being sucked into an active MRI machine, police confirmed Friday.
The incident occurred when the man, who has not yet been publicly identified, entered the MRI suite wearing a metallic necklace. The powerful magnetic field of the machine, which was reportedly already in operation, caused the chain to be violently pulled toward the scanner—dragging the man with it.
Authorities say the magnetic force resulted in catastrophic injuries. Despite immediate medical intervention, the man succumbed to his wounds shortly after the incident.
An investigation is underway to determine how the man was allowed to enter the MRI room with metal on his person, a known and strictly enforced hazard in medical imaging facilities. Hospital staff and administrators are being questioned, and procedural lapses are being reviewed.
“This is a deeply distressing and tragic incident. Protocols exist to prevent such accidents, and we are committed to finding out exactly what went wrong,” said a senior police official.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machines use extremely strong magnetic fields and are surrounded by strict safety guidelines, including the complete removal of all metal objects before entry.
Family members of the deceased are demanding accountability, saying the tragedy could have been easily prevented.
As the medical community reels from the news, questions are being raised about safety compliance in hospitals and the need for stronger enforcement of MRI room protocols.
