A 26-year-old registered nurse, Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, has been arrested in Virginia for allegedly attacking a newborn in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), causing an unexplainable fracture in November . Strotman, a resident of Midlothian, a suburb of Richmond, faces charges of malicious wounding and child abuse that caused serious injury.
The arrest comes after a series of mysterious injuries to babies in the NICU at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond in November and December, prompting officials to launch an internal investigation and close the unit to new patients on Christmas Eve ¹.
The hospital initially attributed the fractures to the delicate nature of premature infants but later increased security, installed new surveillance systems, and notified police after a second series of attacks ¹. Authorities are currently investigating whether Strotman is connected to at least six separate incidents involving injured newborns.
Dominique Hackey, the father of one of the victims, expressed sadness and regret upon learning of Strotman’s arrest, saying, “Finally we can get some answers as to who abused our son” ¹.
Strotman’s registered nurse license was issued in 2019 and is valid until May 2026 ¹. With additional charges possible, police are asking anyone with information to contact detectives.
