Rescue Efforts Underway in China’s Sichuan Province After Deadly Landslide
A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has struck Jingping village in Yibin city, China’s Sichuan province, killing at least one person and leaving 28 others missing.
The disaster, which occurred on Saturday morning, buried 10 houses under debris. Rescue teams are racing against time to locate survivors, with nearly 1,000 personnel, including armed police, firefighters, and medical professionals, involved in the operation.
President Xi Jinping has ordered authorities to do everything possible to minimize casualties and properly handle the aftermath. Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong visited the site to guide the rescue operation and urged authorities to make every effort to search for the missing people.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the landslide was caused by recent heavy rainfall and local geological conditions. China has allocated 80 million yuan (approximately $11 million) to support disaster relief and recovery efforts.
The rescue operation is ongoing, with teams using drones, life-detection radars, and other equipment to locate survivors. Two injured victims have been rescued, and around 360 people have been evacuated from the area.
