Tragedy Strikes in Detroit: Two Children Found Dead in Casino Parking Garage
A heartbreaking incident occurred in downtown Detroit on Monday afternoon when two children were found dead inside a parked vehicle at the Hollywood Casino Hotel at Greektown parking garage.
Circumstances Surrounding the Incident
According to the Detroit Police Department, a family of seven, including five children, arrived at the casino parking garage around 1 a.m. Monday. They were living in a van that ran out of gas on the ninth floor. The family, who were reportedly unsheltered and without a residence, were seeking temporary refuge.
Discovery of the Deceased Children
At around noon, the mother noticed that her 9-year-old son was unresponsive and called a friend to take him to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. While at the hospital, the grandmother discovered that a 2-year-old girl was also unresponsive. The friend returned to the parking garage and took the girl to the hospital, where both children were pronounced dead.
Investigation and Response
The cause of death has not been officially determined, but police believe the children succumbed to hypothermia. The mother is being detained and has provided statements to detectives, who are investigating the incident as a criminal matter.
Community Response and Resources
The City of Detroit has reminded residents of available warming centers and shelters. The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries has also offered its facilities as a refuge for those in need. Officials have emphasized that resources are available to prevent such tragedies.
Reaction from Authorities
Detroit Police Capt. Nathan Duda expressed his sadness and concern, stating, “I don’t think anyone really wants to think about that at the moment with the two children passed, but the reality is that the circumstances do have to be examined.”
