A 14-year-old boy died in a fire at an industrial unit in Gateshead’s Bill Quay area on Friday evening. Following the incident, 14 children, aged 11 to 14, were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and remain in police custody.
The body found inside the building at Fairfield industrial park is believed to be that of Layton Carr, a 14-year-old who had been reported missing.
The police are investigating the cause of the fire and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. The community has left floral tributes for Layton, and a fundraising campaign for his mother has raised over £7,500.
Layton’s school, Hebburn Comprehensive, described him as a “valued and much-loved member” of the school community and invited people to lay flowers there in tribute
