A devastating outbreak of powerful storms and tornadoes tore through several Midwestern and Southern states overnight Friday, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least 27 lives. The storms brought widespread chaos, flattening buildings and snapping trees in their wake.
Kentucky Bears the Brunt
Kentucky was among the hardest-hit states, with at least 18 fatalities reported, according to Governor Andy Beshear. The governor warned that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue. A first responder, Roger Leslie Leatherman, a Laurel County fireman, was among the victims.
Eyewitness Accounts
Kristen Mosley, a resident of London, Kentucky, described the devastation as “total devastation. I mean, trees ripped up, houses ripped apart… You can’t really put it into words how tragic it is.”
Missouri Also Affected
In Missouri, five people lost their lives in the St. Louis area, with over 30 more injured, according to Mayor Cara Spencer. The mayor described the devastation as “truly tremendous,” with an estimated 5,000 buildings impacted.
Response Efforts
Responders in St. Louis are still searching for survivors, and officials have announced a curfew to allow crews to do their work safely. The devastating impact of these storms has left communities reeling, with many more likely to be affected in the coming days.
