The community of Ogden, Utah — and all who had the honor of knowing him — are grieving the profound loss of Brandon Odell Miles, who passed away unexpectedly on June 21, 2025, in Colorado. He was 44 years old.
Born November 4, 1980, in Ogden to Mark J. and Debra Lee Miles, Brandon’s life was defined by service, strength, and unwavering love. He was a man of integrity — a protector, a warrior, a father, and a friend who lived by quiet principle rather than loud proclamation.
From the rugged ranches of Stanley, Idaho to the front lines of Iraq, Brandon’s grit and courage never wavered. He served with honor in the United States Army Reserve, 872nd CS Company, deploying to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His service was decorated with numerous military honors, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award), and Iraq Campaign Medal, among others — each a quiet testament to the strength and discipline he carried into every aspect of his life.
Brandon transitioned from soldier to peace officer, continuing his life of service with the same resolute dedication. From Patrol to SWAT, Bomb Squad, Motors, School Resource, and ultimately Detective in Crimes Against Children, Sergeant Brandon Miles gave everything to his community. His mission was never about glory — only justice, only safety, only service. He protected the most vulnerable, stood as a shield for those who could not shield themselves, and led with a calm, steadfast hand.
To those who knew him best, Brandon was far more than his resume. He was a man of deep love and fierce loyalty, whose heart beat strongest for his family. He was a devoted husband to Tanya Sue “Kit” Newbery, a loving father to Charley Nicole and Joey Jane Miles, and a guiding presence to Jonas “Joe” and Ronan “The Rooster” Shultz, whom he embraced as his own.
Brandon was the kind of man who made time for what mattered — nightly dinners where values were passed down, evenings spent teaching his kids discipline and awareness, and quiet moments where his love spoke volumes. He was a gifted marksman and gunsmith, a bow hunter, a man who found peace in the wilderness and pride in a well-earned day’s work.
His life was a living tribute to strength, humility, and unwavering moral clarity. He was John Wayne’s kind of man — courageous without needing to prove it, loyal without needing to say it, and a steady force in an often unpredictable world.
Brandon is survived by his loving wife Tanya; daughters Charley and Joey; sons Joe and Ronan; parents Mark and Debra Miles; brothers Jason (Andrea), Jacob, Nathan (Savannah), and Kenneth (Heather); mother-in-law Valerie Newbery; and brother-in-law Franklin Newbery. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Thomas Walker Newbery.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary (3408 Washington Blvd), with visitation opportunities on Sunday from 5–8 p.m. and Monday from 12:30–1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Arlington Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be hosted Monday from 3–5 p.m. at the Lindquist Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of service or donations in Brandon’s honor — a man who lived to give, protect, and love.
Brandon Odell Miles lived a life of sacred purpose — steadfast, humble, and full of love. His legacy is carved in the hearts of those he guarded, guided, and gave everything to. He will be missed beyond measure — and remembered forever
