Bradford County, FL – The Bradford County community is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of Dakota Brooke Thacker, a vibrant and compassionate young woman whose life was tragically cut short on July 13, 2025, at just 30 years old. A beloved daughter, sister, nurse, and rodeo athlete, Dakota’s death leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Born on June 8, 1995, in Gainesville, Florida, Dakota was a source of joy from the very beginning. Raised in Starke, she quickly stood out for her warmth, drive, and magnetic personality. A graduate of Keystone Heights High School, Dakota was a fierce competitor on the volleyball court, earning a scholarship to Lake Sumter State College where she continued to excel.
Her passion for adventure led her to South Dakota State University, where she joined the college rodeo team and built lifelong friendships. Horses were more than a hobby for Dakota — they were part of her soul. She was an accomplished barrel racer and horsewoman whose love for the sport mirrored her bold and free-spirited nature.
In 2019, Dakota returned home to Bradford County to begin a career in nursing — a field that reflected her deep compassion and servant’s heart. She earned her LPN and served patients at Lake Butler Hospital, recently enrolling in a bridge program to become a Registered Nurse. Her colleagues and patients alike remember her for her comforting presence and unwavering dedication.
But Dakota’s impact extended far beyond her professional life. Known for her infectious laugh, sharp wit, and heartwarming smile, she had a rare ability to make everyone feel seen and loved. Whether comforting a patient, spending time with her family, or sharing a moment with friends, Dakota lived each day with purpose, love, and unshakable faith.
Her Christian values were central to her life. While she was humble about her faith, those around her felt the strength of her belief in God — expressed through kindness, resilience, and grace. Dakota was a living reflection of hope, even in life’s most challenging moments.
She is survived by her parents Shannon (Amanda) Thacker and Brandee (Richard) Barnes; her twin brother Dalton (Taylor) Thacker, with whom she shared an inseparable bond; sister Josie Barnes; step-siblings Kelsey, Kendra, Chelyen, and Hunter; maternal grandmother Diane Moody; her aunt Nikki (Mitchell) Gunter; and her beloved niece Wiley Anne Thacker — along with many extended family members, coworkers, and dear friends.
Dakota’s love for animals was another hallmark of her generous spirit. She leaves behind her faithful dogs, Waylon and Judd, and cherished horses, Nel and Juno — companions who brought her comfort and joy.
A celebration of Dakota’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Sampson City Church of God. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by Archer-Milton Funeral Home in Lake Butler. A second memorial service will be announced at a later date.
As her loved ones gather to remember her, Dakota’s legacy is one of deep love, fierce determination, and boundless compassion. Though her time was far too short, she lived more fully and joyfully than many do in a lifetime.
Rest in peace, Dakota. Your spirit will live on in every life you touched and every heart you lifted.
