Canada is mourning the loss of a dynamic and spirited force this week following the passing of Debbie Nightingale — a pioneering figure in the Canadian film industry and, later, the passionate founder of the celebrated Haute Goat farm. Her death leaves behind a legacy of creativity, joy, and fearless reinvention that touched lives from Toronto to rural Ontario — and far beyond.
Nightingale was perhaps best known to many in the arts as a trailblazer: the co-founder of Hot Docs, a leader at the Industry Centre of the Toronto International Film Festival, and a prolific producer of documentaries, TV series, and films. But those who knew her best also remember the day she walked away from it all — not out of disillusionment, but to chase an entirely new dream.
That dream took form in the shape of Haute Goat, the farm that became a local treasure and international destination. With horses, goats, alpacas, pigs, and chickens, Debbie transformed her love of animals and nature into a sanctuary of joy and connection. Visitors came for the baby goats and left inspired by the spirit of the woman behind it all.
“She didn’t just talk about following dreams,” said a family member. “She lived them — and she showed us all how to live without regret.”
Debbie’s life was marked by fearless choices and a deep love for both people and animals. She was a devoted mother who gave her children freedom to explore life, succeed or stumble, and always return home to unconditional support. A self-described bohemian with the grit of a pioneer, Debbie never let hardship deter her from taking a morning walk with the goats or riding her horse into the sunset — even when her strength was waning.
Her sister, reflecting on their bond, described Debbie as “a force of nature” — the early riser who embraced the sunrise while others were still asleep. They may have lived different lifestyles — one in the city, the other on the farm — but they shared unshakable values and a deep, mutual respect.
“She made her mark on the world,” her sister said, “and left a big hole in it, too.”
In remembering Debbie Nightingale, we honor a woman who lived fully, dreamed boldly, and left the world a little more beautiful — and a little more magical — than she found it.
Rest in peace, Debbie.
Your light, your laughter, and your love of life will live on through every goat cuddle, film memory, and story shared in your name.
