North Hollywood, CA — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of one of its own. Deputy Marcos Pena Jr., 31, was killed early Tuesday morning in a devastating traffic collision on the northbound 101 Freeway near North Hollywood. The crash occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m., while Pena was off duty.
Deputies responding to the scene confirmed that Deputy Pena was pronounced deceased at the site of the crash. Details of the collision remain under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, who are working to determine the cause of the fatal incident.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic and untimely loss of Deputy Pena Jr., who was taken from us far too soon,” said Sheriff Robert G. Luna in a solemn statement released Tuesday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of serving alongside him.”
Deputy Pena joined the Department on July 14, 2022, and graduated with Class #462 from the Sheriff’s Training Academy. Following his graduation, he was assigned to Men’s Central Jail, where he quickly earned a reputation as a hardworking and dedicated member of the team. Known for his calm demeanor, quiet strength, and commitment to public service, Pena’s absence is already deeply felt among his colleagues.
His family, who shared in his pride and sacrifice, is now grappling with an unimaginable loss. Deputy Pena is survived by his mother, Michelle Rubio, and his stepfather, Deputy Albert Rubio, who is currently assigned to Court Services. He also leaves behind four stepsiblings: Diserre, Ashley, Albert, and Deja Rubio.
The Sheriff’s Department has requested that the public and media respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this period of grief.
For those who knew him, Marcos Pena Jr. was more than a badge and uniform—he was a son, a brother, a colleague, and a man who wore his sense of duty with humility and heart. His journey in law enforcement had only just begun, and the promise of a life dedicated to protecting others has now been tragically cut short.
In the words of one of his academy classmates: “Marcos was the kind of guy who made you want to be better—more disciplined, more selfless. He didn’t say much, but when he did, it mattered.”
Flags across Sheriff’s facilities will be flown at half-staff this week in Deputy Pena’s honor.
A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days.
Gone too soon. Remembered always. Rest in peace, Deputy Marcos Pena Jr.
