GOSHEN, NY — With heavy hearts, the Minisink Hook & Ladder Co. #1 and the Goshen Fire District mourn the loss of one of their most devoted and decorated members, Gerard H. “Jerry” Killenberger, whose passing marks the end of an era defined by steadfast duty, quiet heroism, and lifelong public service.
Jerry, a Past President, Past Commissioner, Life Member, and cherished brother-in-arms, passed away after decades of tireless service to his country, his community, and his fellow first responders. His loss is felt not only in the Goshen firehouse, but across the city, the FDNY family, and the broader brotherhood of firefighters and veterans whose lives he touched.
A Patriot, Protector, and Pillar of Strength
Jerry’s path of service began with honor in the United States Navy, where he served from 1956 to 1962. His military years instilled in him a discipline and humility that would become the foundation for everything he did thereafter.
Following his time in the Navy, Jerry joined the New York City Fire Department, where he served for an incredible 34 years, ultimately rising to the role of Fire Marshal. His dedication, bravery, and calm presence in the face of danger earned him respect that words can scarcely measure.
But even after retirement, Jerry’s commitment to emergency service continued. He became a Life Member of the Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and within Minisink Hook & Ladder Co. #1, he was a mentor, a leader, and a quiet giant who embodied the best of what fire service stands for.
More Than a Firefighter—A Friend, Teacher, and Servant
In Goshen, Jerry wasn’t just a man in uniform. He was a neighbor, a teacher, and a constant presence—from department trainings to parades, memorials to firehouse dinners. He trained the next generation not only in the mechanics of firefighting, but in the values of integrity, compassion, and courage.
“Jerry was the guy you called when you didn’t know what to do,” one firefighter said. “He never made you feel small. He lifted you up and showed you how to lead by example.”
His voice—firm yet kind—was a guiding light in times of uncertainty. His presence—steady and strong—offered comfort and assurance, especially in the darkest of moments.
A Community’s Final Salute
To honor Jerry’s legacy, a visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Donovan’s Funeral Home in Goshen, with a Firematic Service at 6:30 PM. All firefighters are asked to arrive by 6:00 PM in Class A uniform to offer their final salute.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday, July 17 at 11:00 AM at St. James Episcopal Church, with burial at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery—where Jerry will be laid to rest with full honors befitting a man who lived and died in service to others.
A Legacy That Will Never Be Forgotten
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation and the Uniformed Firefighters Association – Widows and Children’s Fund—causes that speak to Jerry’s enduring mission: protecting the protectors and caring for their families.
Jerry Killenberger’s legacy isn’t only in the years he served or the titles he held. It’s in the fires extinguished, the hearts comforted, and the men and women he inspired to stand tall in the face of danger.
As the bell rings one final time, and the firehouse flag flies at half-staff, we remember a man who gave his all—with dignity, with honor, and with love.
Rest easy, Jerry. Your watch is over, but your legacy lives on.
