Known simply as “Elle” to many, Mary Elle Planetta was a radiant force of nature — full of life, creativity, and compassion. Her journey from Sydney, Cape Breton, to becoming a staple in Halifax’s culinary scene was marked by hard work, warmth, and a deep love for bringing people together.
From an early age, Elle was drawn to the kitchen — the heartbeat of every Cape Breton home. Hosting, cooking, and gathering with loved ones were not just traditions, but part of her DNA. Elle’s academic and professional journey was equally inspiring. She completed a degree in Human Kinetics at StFX University before moving to Halifax, where she pursued further studies in economics at Saint Mary’s University while working at the beloved Cousin’s Diner. It was there that she honed her skills, formed lifelong friendships, and began to dream of owning her own restaurant.
That dream became a reality, and Elle’s Bistro quickly grew into more than just a restaurant — it became a home for many, shaped by Elle’s belief in good food, meaningful conversation, and the kind of hospitality that made strangers feel like family.
