The communities of Yoakum, Shiner, and Austin are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jack Janecek, who passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the young age of 24. A life that radiated kindness, purpose, and abundant love has ended far too soon, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him.
Born July 1, 2000, in Yoakum to David and Leah Janecek, Jack lived a life of exceptional character and deep faith. A 2018 graduate of St. Paul High School and a proud 2022 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Jack dedicated his heart and his talents to education, teaching high school math at St. Dominic Savio Catholic School in Austin. His devotion to his students and gift for mentorship earned him the 2024 “Teacher of the Year” award — a testament to the lives he touched and the difference he made in and out of the classroom.
But Jack was more than just an outstanding educator — he was a joyful soul who brought light to every room, a loyal friend, a devoted son and brother, and a man of deep, unwavering faith. He was an active member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, a member of the Shiner Knights of Columbus Msgr. Netardus Council #3081, and an Eagle Scout with Troop 231 of Shiner. Service to God and community was not just a part of his life — it was the core of who he was.
Friends and family remember Jack for his incredible generosity, quick wit, and love for the little things in life. Whether he was fishing, cooking up a new recipe, or playing poker or dominoes — games he almost always won — Jack lived fully and joyfully. He was a fierce competitor, but even more so, he was a loyal teammate and a source of laughter and support.
Perhaps Jack’s greatest gift was the way he loved. He didn’t just say it — he showed it. He made sure the people around him knew they mattered. As one loved one shared, “No one ever had to wonder if Jack loved them. He made sure you felt it.”
Jack is survived by his loving parents, David and Leah Janecek, his sister Maria Janecek, and brothers Ben (Laura), Dr. Jed (Morgan), and Hank Janecek, as well as a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who considered themselves family. He is now reunited in eternal peace with his sister Rachel Janecek, and his grandparents Dr. John Dennis and Bertie Wagner, and Gilbert and Benita Janecek.
A Vigil Mass with rosary will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow on Sunday, June 29 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Bob Knippenberg officiating. Jack will be laid to rest in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial donations to the Jack Janecek Memorial Scholarship Fund, continuing his legacy of love for learning and service to others.
Jack’s life, though brief, was beautifully full — a testimony of the Beatitudes lived out. His absence is deeply felt, but his memory remains a radiant light in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Rest in peace, Jack. You taught us how to live with purpose, to love without hesitation, and to serve with a joyful heart. You will be forever missed, and forever remembered.
