JACKSON, MS — The world of gospel music is grieving the loss of one of its most beloved voices. Mama Mosie Burks, the legendary lead vocalist of the Mississippi Mass Choir, has passed away at the age of 92.
Often referred to as the “Mother of Gospel,” Mama Mosie’s powerful voice and unwavering faith helped define the sound of modern gospel music. Her electrifying performances, filled with spirit and soul, lifted hearts and inspired generations of believers around the world.
The Mississippi Mass Choir confirmed her passing in a heartfelt statement, calling her “a light to the world and a vessel of God’s anointing whose voice could shake the heavens and soothe the brokenhearted.”
Born in Forest, Mississippi, Mosie Burks didn’t rise to fame until later in life, but her voice—rich, raw, and deeply rooted in tradition—quickly became the heart of the choir. She became internationally known for her soul-stirring solos on songs like “When I Rose This Morning” and “Your Grace and Mercy.” Her testimony, combined with her incredible delivery, made her a beloved fixture not only in churches but also on global stages.
To her fans and fellow choir members, she was simply Mama Mosie—a name that spoke to her nurturing spirit and spiritual authority. Always dressed with dignity and grace, she carried the Gospel with authenticity, humility, and joy.
“Mama Mosie wasn’t just a singer,” said one longtime choir member. “She was a living praise report. When she sang, she didn’t perform—she ministered.”
Even into her 90s, Mama Mosie continued to sing, travel, and inspire. Her commitment to ministry never waned, and her story—of perseverance, late-in-life recognition, and unwavering faith—became a beacon of hope to many.
Tributes have begun pouring in from gospel artists, pastors, and fans across the globe, many sharing personal encounters with her and the impact her voice had on their faith journeys.
Funeral arrangements and memorial services are expected to be announced soon by her family and the Mississippi Mass Choir.
As we say goodbye to this Gospel giant, we give thanks for a life well-lived and a voice that led millions to Christ.
Rest in heavenly peace, Mama Mosie Burks. Your song lives on.
