Cause of the Accident
According to police, the ship lost power while maneuvering, causing it to crash into the bridge abutment on the Brooklyn side. The vessel, with 277 people on board, was unable to regain control, leading to the devastating consequences.

Brooklyn resident Nick Corso witnessed the accident and described the chaotic scene: “Lots of screaming, some sailors hanging from the masts.” Another witness, Kelvin Flores, recounted the commotion and chaos, with fire engines and police struggling to reach the scene due to congested roads.
Aftermath
The Brooklyn Bridge was reopened after a preliminary inspection, with no major damage reported. The CuauhtĂ©moc was towed from the scene, its three masts severely damaged. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her deep sadness over the loss of two crew members.

Police believe “mechanical issues” and a power cut caused the collision. The incident is currently under investigation.

The CuauhtĂ©moc, measuring 297 feet long and 40 feet wide, was built in 1982. It was on a training mission, sailing from the Mexican port of Acapulco to Iceland, as part of the naval military school’s cadet training program.
