A 35-year-old former nurse, Sean Cregg, has been charged with manslaughter and a health and safety offense in connection with the death of William Cameron, 38, while in police custody in 2020.
Cameron died in hospital after being taken into custody at Loddon Valley Police Station near Reading. An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation led to the charges, which Cregg will face at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on July 1.
The IOPC investigation concluded in March 2021 and referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which ultimately brought the charges. A police sergeant involved in the case will not face charges.
Cregg’s former employer, Mountain Healthcare, expressed condolences to Cameron’s family and stated that Cregg has not worked for them since the incident. Both Mountain Healthcare and Thames Valley Police emphasized their priority on safety and dignity, with the police declining to comment further due to ongoing legal proceedings
