LOMBOK, INDONESIA — What began as an adventurous hike near Indonesia’s majestic Mount Rinjani ended in heartbreak, as 26-year-old Brazilian advertiser Juliana Marins lost her life in a devastating fall from a cliff. Authorities confirmed on Friday, June 27, that an autopsy revealed her cause of death as blunt trauma to the chest, sustained during the tragic accident.
Juliana was reported missing after slipping and falling during a hike last Saturday. Her body was recovered on Tuesday, June 24, in a remote area near the volcano, and transferred to Bali Mandara Hospital for a formal autopsy, which was conducted late Thursday night.
Forensic expert Ida Bagus Alit shared the results with the press, revealing that Juliana suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including:
-
Fractures to the chest, shoulder, spine, and thigh
-
Severe internal bleeding and organ damage
-
Numerous scrapes and abrasions on her body
“The main cause of death was the injuries to her chest and back,” Dr. Alit stated. “There were no signs of prolonged suffering — the extent of her injuries indicates she died approximately 20 minutes after the fall.”
The findings dispel earlier fears that Juliana may have lingered for hours awaiting rescue. According to forensic evidence, there were no signs of hypothermia or delayed hemorrhage, suggesting a rapid and fatal impact.
Juliana’s body was transferred from Bhayangkara Hospital on Lombok Island — which lacked forensic capabilities — to Bali, delaying the autopsy by several days. These logistical challenges, along with the condition of the remains after transportation, have made pinpointing the exact time of death difficult.
Juliana Marins had been traveling in Indonesia when she set out on the challenging trail around Rinjani Volcano, a popular but treacherous destination for hikers. Her sudden death has sent shockwaves through both the Brazilian community and international travelers abroad.
Friends and loved ones have remembered her as bright, adventurous, and full of life — a young woman passionate about nature, culture, and connection.
As tributes pour in from around the world, Juliana’s story stands as a somber reminder of both the beauty and the unforgiving danger of wild places — and of a young life gone far too soon.
