Eau Claire, WI-The Eau Claire and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jacob Carl Bresser, one of the most decorated athletes in Old Abe hockey history, who passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2025, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was 29 years old.
Jake, as he was affectionately known by all who knew and loved him, leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his impressive accomplishments on the ice and in the classroom but also by the kindness, humility, and joy he brought into every space he entered. His sudden passing has sent waves of grief through former teammates, coaches, classmates, colleagues, and loved ones across the Midwest and beyond.
“A Legend on the Ice, a Light Off It”
Born on November 7, 1995, in Eau Claire, Jake quickly stood out as an athlete with grit, talent, and heart. A proud graduate of Eau Claire Memorial High School, he earned his place in the history books as one of the most decorated players to ever wear the Old Abe jersey. Known for his work ethic and sportsmanship, Jake wasn’t just a standout player — he was the heart of the team.
His hockey journey continued at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he captained the Blugold men’s team and was honored as an NCAA Division III (ACHA) First Team All-American. He led not only by example but with compassion, lifting his teammates both on and off the ice.
“He had this quiet confidence,” one former coach recalled. “When Jake stepped onto the ice, you just knew everything was going to be okay.”
Beyond Hockey: A Life of Balance and Brilliance
Jake balanced his athletic passion with academic excellence, graduating in 2020 with dual degrees in Finance and Accounting. Never one to stop growing, he went on to earn a Master’s in Personal Financial Planning, demonstrating the same tenacity and discipline that fueled his athletic success.
Professionally, Jake thrived as a Certified Financial Planner with RBC Wealth Management. Passing the SIE, Series 7, and 66 exams, he quickly earned the admiration of clients and colleagues—not only for his skill, but for his integrity, warmth, and the genuine care he offered each person he worked with.
A Devoted Husband, Son, Brother, and Friend
More than anything, Jake cherished his time with those he loved. His marriage to Brielle was a joyful partnership built on laughter, shared adventures, and unwavering support. From biking and cribbage battles to walks with their dog Lola and perfecting his cortado-making skills, Jake found happiness in the small things — and made them feel big and meaningful.
He was a beloved uncle to August, Henrik, and Roman, a cherished brother and son, and a friend whose loyalty ran deep. Whether hosting family dinners, hitting the golf course, or relaxing at the cabin, Jake had a way of making every moment feel full — full of humor, presence, and heart.
An Enduring Legacy
In the days following Jake’s death, tributes have poured in from across the region. Former teammates, coworkers, classmates, and family members have shared memories of his kindness, generosity, and ability to make people feel seen.
