A 16-year-old boy tragically lost his life while swimming in a lake at Colwick Country Park in Nottinghamshire on Wednesday. Emergency services were alerted at 5:20 pm after the boy went missing, and a massive rescue effort ensued. Unfortunately, his body was recovered just before 8 pm.
Authorities have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious, but an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police and local officials are urging people to exercise caution when entering open water, citing hidden dangers that can prove fatal.
Ch Insp David Mather expressed condolences to the boy’s family and friends, stating, “This is a tragic discovery, and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.” Tom Staples, group manager of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, also emphasized the importance of water safety.
An eyewitness, Philip Starbuck, who was fishing at the lake, described the scene as “heartbreaking” and recounted seeing the boy’s friends trying to find him. Friends of the boy gathered at the lake to pay tribute, leaving flowers and balloons. They remembered him as someone who always made everyone laugh.
Local authorities and organizations are echoing the warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water without proper supervision. Nottingham City Council and WholeHealth, which runs lifeguard-supervised swimming sessions at the park, are urging people to follow safety guidelines.
